What I’ve done

Since the concept of retirement living was introduced into the UK market I have played a leading and pivotal role in its adoption and roll out.

Sunrise Senior Living

As development director when the company first launched itself into Europe, I played a key role in establishing Sunrise as the UK market leader in the premium end of the care home sector.

During my 7 years with Sunrise my team identified sites, acquired land, gained planning consent and developed 27 homes across the UK, adapting a US model to meet the demands of the British market.

Signature Senior Living

As CEO, I was tasked with leading the existing directors to drive profitability and the strategic direction of the company. I re-focused the existing facilities, operational model and design of sites then under development. In just over two years I raised occupancy levels at the existing site from 31% to 85% with improved profitability.

I led the team to establish a new sites pipeline of four, owned and consented, with a total development budget of £23 million secured from three commercial banks in a deteriorating market.

As Development Director, I led the team that acquired sites, achieved planning consents and built retirement villages throughout the UK. During my five years in that role we have achieved 100% success rate for planning consent on three new villages, recommenced development of five stalled villages, many with retained and restored heritage buildings and, when I took on the responsibility for the on-site sales teams, doubled the sales rate.

PegasusLife

PegasusLife, the innovative retirement living developer, has been very successful with new design and operational approaches to later living, but they and their funders, Oaktree Capital Management, were keen to explore the care market. As Care Director for PegasusLife, I advised on how the existing business could be supported by a home health agency or DCA, explored the opportunities for providing a rental product for older people, and prepared a business plan for a new care home model.

After this initial consultancy advice, PegasusLife and their funders, Oaktree Capital Management, accepted my business plan for an innovative new care home operation, to become known as All of Us. Like the name, this was a completely new approach to the sector, which created a model of care and care home that could provide outstanding individual care for older people. I brought on board Dr. David Sheard of Dementia Care Matters, whose experience and knowledge of caring for people with dementia is internationally recognised. Taking his care knowledge, I led the team that developed a new design of care home and operation that sub divides the typical institutional care home into smaller 8 – 10 bed homes that genuinely can provide a home to live and thrive in, rather than an institution to die in.
